The state system in four sentences. 1. The work cell in the SHIZO (punishment isolation cell) is a kennel, and inside it: a sewing machine, a sink with cold water, a toilet that is just a hole in the floor, and instructions on the wall. 2. The instructions on the wall define the working conditions; their first sentence reads: “You are required to comply with every point of these instructions,” and the last: “And at the end of the work shift, you are required to wash your face and hands with warm water.” 3. I file a complaint with the court: “I am a seamster, my instructions require me to wash my hands with warm water after my shift, but there is only cold (icy) water in the cell; my labor rights are being violated.” 4. The court: “Warm water, cold water—what the hell difference does it make, it’s all trivial; you lost; pay the colony’s court costs.”
