I went with my daughter to see "Asterix at the Olympic Games." Overall, not bad. All the kids in the theater were thrilled: a very beautiful princess, a bad prince, a good prince, and jokes in the style of somebody-gets-punched-and-goes-flying-for-a-kilometer. The French, of course, are kind of ridiculous with their mothballed stars, like Depardieu and Alain Delon (they gave him absolutely magnificent bright green eyes). But never mind that. I spent the whole movie sitting there wondering why they made the dubbing so completely awful and unacceptable. It was simply unbearable to listen to.
Turns out they didn’t cut corners on the voice work. Quite the opposite—they invested in it. During the credits, they solemnly announced that the characters had been dubbed by Russian celebrities—Galygin, Anfisa Chekhova, Diskoteka Avariya (a Russian pop group), and a few others.
