Venediktov is a cool guy. Very cool. If you're a liberal, then be a consistent liberal. If Venediktov supports trial by jury, then he supports trial by jury all the way. He demands Ulman be released too, and he isn't afraid to say so publicly. Maybe he finds Ulman deeply repugnant, but that doesn't matter. It seems like an obvious point. And everyone who holds liberal views should be saying the same thing. But no such luck. All our "human rights advocates" are fiercely in favor of trial by jury, yet just as fiercely in favor of locking Ulman up regardless of rights or the law. I've discussed this issue with many representatives of the "democratic camp." The best response was: "I get it, but doesn't that mean I'm defending Ulman?! Our own people will eat me alive." Arguments that you're defending not Ulman, but trial by jury, don't work. Corporate demagoguery matters more. And Ulman at least admitted that he killed those people. In the Arakcheev-Khudyakov case, the military men didn't confess, and the evidence there is at the very least questionable, yet only the "right-wing" are protesting the overturning of the jury's verdict. which is sad
