Dear friends, please advise. I’ve been nurturing this dream of breaking away for about ten days to visit your America and do the classic cross-country road trip from West to East. You know, the iconic landscape with a road disappearing into the horizon, and having lunch in places where the waitress comes by and tops up your mug from a coffee pot. Nothing special—just the usual cinematic clichés. But there’s a problem. All the companies offering rental cars seem to give you things like a Chrysler Sebring. It’s not a bad car, but (you can call me a cheap poser) I absolutely hate the idea of making The Journey I’ve Dreamed Of in a Chrysler Sebring. It has neither whimsy nor swagger. Just rent an expensive car? That has a certain whimsy to it, but no swagger at all. For The Journey I’ve Dreamed Of, I need something like this:
This has whimsy, swagger, and a metaphysical hint to it. A question for those in the know: Is this even realistic? Do they rent out cars like that? And how much might it cost? Could this showiness backfire—will people take me for a Black pimp or a drug dealer and pull me over on every corner?
