An absolutely monstrous story. On Thursday night, a family of vacationers was attacked in the Chegem district of Kabardino-Balkaria (a republic in Russia’s North Caucasus). The husband and wife—employees of the Federal Security Service directorate for Krasnodar Krai—were killed, while the attackers left their 13-year-old daughter unharmed. This was already the third attack in the republic over the past month on vacationers by bandits posing as law enforcement officers. As Kommersant learned, the married couple—36-year-old Anatoly and 34-year-old Antonina Petrukhin—arrived at the Chegem waterfalls, one of Kabardino-Balkaria’s tourist attractions and a destination for many visitors, with their 13-year-old daughter on August 25 during their vacation. With the permission of the owners of one of the many cafés there, they pitched a tent in the yard of the owners’ private home. Around midnight on Friday, four unidentified men in camouflage uniforms and masks, armed with assault rifles, appeared at the café. They introduced themselves as officers from the local district police department, supposedly there to check documents. The couple identified themselves as military personnel, after which the visitors ordered them to go with them. Before that, they bound the café owner and her son with tape, as well as the Petrukhins’ daughter, who was asleep in the tent. Then, in the Krasnodar family’s Toyota, they drove about 500 meters from the café to the river floodplain, where they shot the couple dead on the boulders with automatic weapons and fled. Later that day, the burned-out foreign-made car belonging to the Petrukhin family was found in the neighboring Elbrus district of Kabardino-Balkaria, near the village of Zhankhoteko. ... Law enforcement agencies in the republic believe the murder was carried out by members of the local Wahhabi militant underground, who have recently adopted a new tactic. Appearing in vacation spots in the mountain areas, they pose as special forces officers, find out which vacationers have ties to law enforcement, and, if there are any, kill them. .... *On the night of August 19, in a forest near the village of Kendelen, Wahhabis shot dead Mukhtar Baichekuev, an officer of the Elbrus district police department, and Viktor Veremeyev, an employee of one of the local farms, who had gone out with a group for a shashlik barbecue. ****In both cases, civilians became victims of the criminals solely because they were not Muslims. ***//////// Yes, yes, the development of beach tourism will surely help improve the situation.
