Belykh, my congratulations! Despite the fact that his party includes a couple of people who really belong in prison, and a couple more who ought to be wiped off the face of the earth altogether, I congratulate that very party as well. Even taking into account all sorts of possible deals with the governor, 16.3% and second place is probably the biggest victory for the democratic forces of the year—perhaps the biggest since 1996. And in a dump like Perm!! It is especially gratifying that Nikita Belykh thoroughly rubbed the noses of all the know-it-alls in the Union of Right Forces (SPS) and other parties who were eagerly rubbing their hands, waiting for him to fail. Right now, there are two people in the democratic movement who have managed to back up their claims to seats on the presidium: Mitrokhin, who was the main face of the Moscow City Duma campaign, and Belykh with his impressively strong Perm result yesterday. The others will have a chance to demonstrate their formidable leadership qualities and organizational abilities in the upcoming elections in St. Petersburg and the Moscow Region.
