Freedom of speech costs money. That’s good news, because it means we can provide it. The modern technology exists, the printing presses exist, decent journalists exist — that is almost enough for honest, independent media outlets to appear. All that’s needed is to add money. Not just casually, in general. But as a sign of support. We need to pay for quality information. For each of us, it’s a very small amount, but for a particular media outlet we love, it’s a matter of life and death. *The New Times* magazine has launched a major subscription campaign.
With great pleasure, following Drugoi, I want to support them too. An annual subscription (46 issues) costs 3,600 rubles (about $40–45 at current exchange rates), of which half actually goes to the publication itself. 50,000 subscribers would give the magazine complete independence and the ability to write what they believe needs to be written — without looking over their shoulder at either the authorities or advertisers. You can subscribe very easily right here — I just did it myself in a couple of minutes. As part of its subscription campaign, The New Times has released several excellent videos in which well-known journalists talk about their experiences with censorship. For example, Pozner talks about one telling incident that some of us still remember (smiley)
