Sorry for speaking in such an unusual format. There are open letters, and then there are open birthday greetings. The thing is, today is my mother’s milestone birthday—she is turning 60. The Investigative Committee (Russia’s main federal investigative authority) denied my request to leave the house for a couple of hours so I could congratulate her in person. That would "harm the interests of the investigation". I can’t even call her—it’s forbidden. So here I am, dictating a post to my wife, who is publishing it here: Mom, happy birthday!
