Well then, my friends. The time has come to start gradually moving toward summing up the contest I announced on my birthday.
The goal was simple: to encourage the emergence of regional YouTube channels that talk about politics and socially important issues.
Throughout these months, we followed the contest participants closely, but I hardly mentioned it at all, and that was entirely deliberate—it was important to see whether the channels entered in the contest could survive without extra attention and produce content often enough.
But make no mistake: even though I wasn’t writing about it, we were listening to your criticism and carefully tracking all your suggestions about the contest.
So what have we got so far, and am I happy with the result?
I am. As of today, 112 channels from 62 cities, representing 50 regions of the country, are still meeting the contest requirements.
A huge thank-you to all the participants—you’re wonderful, and I’m incredibly glad that so many people support the idea of using YouTube to take on the zomboyashchik (a derogatory Russian term for television propaganda).
In fact—and a brief digression here—today’s news that the FSB (Russia’s Federal Security Service) and Roskomnadzor (the state media and internet regulator) have launched a campaign aimed at severely slowing down YouTube across Russia and making it less appealing to citizens reflects the authorities’ fear that people in our country are now getting more of their news from YouTube than from television.
So they’re breaking it, trying to force users away.
Well, while they’re breaking things, we’ll keep building anyway.
Based on these three months, we have drawn up a shortlist of participants advancing to the final.
Now, as promised, I will create a commission that will determine the winners in the most transparent way possible.

I will form the commission and announce its members. That will take about a week.
Then, over the following two weeks, the commission members will watch old and new videos from these fifteen participants.
After that, there will be a vote. Open and easy for you to understand.
Then the joyful distribution of money.
